Be a Suitcase, Not a Pilot!

I recently read about a conversation that was overheard between a mother and her 7-year-old daughter.  It went something like this:

Daughter:  “I love airports because they are like magic gateways to all the other places.”

Mother:  “Yes, they are.  You could be a pilot when you grow up.”

Daughter:  “No, that’s boring.  I wanna be a suitcase!”

Out of the mouths of babes, right?

Yes, there is something to be argued for being a pilot.  It suggests steering your own life.  Being in control.  Not allowing others to take you somewhere you don’t want to be.

However, I think this little girl is on to something.  It all depends on how you look at it.

In this case, a pilot is at the mercy of his passengers.  He is not in control.  He must go where they need him to go.  And, once he gets there, he very rarely gets to experience the destination.  He might get a little time but a true experience is never really had.

Now, a suitcase…a suitcase sticks around a while.  It contains everything it needs within itself and it leaves the safety and knowns of the plane to venture into a new place full of possibilities.  And it does this, not just once, but many times.  It continues to go to new places and experience new things.

In that regard, that little girl is right, being a pilot IS BORING!  I would much rather be a suitcase!

Pack your knowledge, your skills, your passions within yourself, acquire the additional things you need to live your best life, and go out there and explore!  Be a suitcase!
